Rounding out the roster of newcomers, NetherRealm Studios continues to pay homage to the roots of Mortal Kombat with the addition of another action icon from the 80s. With both characters returning to the roster, players can finally see the fallout of Rain's deception and the dissolution of their deadly alliance. During the course of the story, it is revealed that Rain wished to take the throne for himself, organizing a plot involving the theft of Shinnok's Amulet in an effort to claim the crown from under Mileena. Last playable in Mortal Kombat (2011), Rain made an appearance in the Story Mode of MKX, working alongside Mileena and aiding her ascension to the throne of Outworld. Joining Mileena is the Edenian demigod, Rain. With Mileena back in a world where Kitana has assumed the throne of Outworld, fans of the franchise are given a new dynamic between the duo to explore with Mileena's return. Mileena would eventually succeed Shao Kahn after the events of Mortal Kombat (2011), taking his place on the throne before meeting her demise at the hands of D'Vorah. A Tarkatan-Edenian hybrid, Mileena was created in the Flesh Pits by Shang Tsung as a clone of Princess Kitana to serve under Shao Kahn, the Emperor of Outworld at the time of her creation. Perhaps the most requested character from Mortal Kombat's expansive lineup of characters, Mileena finally joins the latest installment of the franchise.
